It's a deeply rewarding game filled with a plethora of customization options and playstyles. It's definitely better when playing with friends, but you can still complete the lengthy adventure solo. Though it's not on Game Pass, the Iceborne expansion is well worth diving into after you finish the base campaign. Supergiant's masterpiece of intense action, exquisite storytelling, and innovative design finally made the leap to Xbox this year, and if you have a Game Pass subscription, this is one game that's both recommended and required on any console.

That alone makes Dragon Quest 11 a wonderful game for those who yearn for JRPGs similar to those from the late '90s and early 2000s. It can feel overwhelming to new players, but the depth of its roster means you're bound to find your groove. Each operator has a role to play, whether you're a marksman, a demolitions expert or just a muscly man with a giant hammer, and out-thinking your opponents feels as good as out-gunning them.

Ubisoft continue to support Siege with regular new maps and operators, and improved tools for new players, as well as an unranked playlist that was added last year, means there's no better time to pull the trigger. During the golden age for indie games that was the last decade, everyone seemed to be playing Spelunky, a roguelike that was notorious for being tough as nails but also rich with hidden secrets and opportunities for fun emergent gameplay. God of War isn't only an incredible tech showcase thanks to its looks and world with no loading screens, but also a carefully told story of fatherhood and a robust action game. In order to do this, you not only need to familiarise yourself with your target's routines Hitman-style, you also need to learn the ins and outs of each section.

Arkane once again delivers on great level design, so that there's plenty to explore. The gunplay feels amazing, and is in typical Arkane style bolstered by a selection of meaningful skills to give you an edge in a fight. This is a time loop game that allows you to retain enough in terms of equipment and progress that things don't get frustrating. There's a lot to see in Deathloop, and while it refines systems you'll recognize from other games, it's another uniquely Arkane affair – executed with style and deeply satisfying throughout.

Bungie's co-op shooter had a rough start to life, but it's getting better and better with each expansion. It's a sumptuous, arrestingly gorgeous thing that most importantly retains its enthusiast's heart under the graphical showcase, and that does its level best to make a car enthusiast out of anyone in its orbit. The genre's now too broad and too varied to make such a statement, though Gran Turismo finds itself a neat slot alongside the likes of Assetto Corsa and iRacing, presenting accessible driving that looks simply staggering. If you've invested in a Forza Horizon 5 controller, I think this matching charging stand is a no-brainer.

I'm not exactly thrilled about the $10 limited edition tax, but the paired aesthetics look stunning. Plus, you'll be saving money on AAs, probably enough to pay for the stand in the long run. Tunic, the long-awaited adventure starring a fox with a sword, is more than just a great Zelda-like.

While it harks back to old-school Zelda games in terms of not guiding players toward the objectives, Tunic has its own approach to creating mystery and intrigue. All throughout the world you'll find pages of an instruction manual–really does look like one that would've been packaged with a game in the early '90s–that you have to piece together to learn about the world around you. It does a wonderful job replicating the thrill of discovery found in early Zelda games. Tunic is much harder than Zelda games from a combat perspective, but overcoming each challenge feels like a great triumph.

Plus, any combat pains you may have are made worthwhile by gorgeous world that is a joy to explore. Slay the Spire marries deck-building with roguelike systems to create one of the best indies in recent years. Throughout your journey up the Spire, you square off against monsters, uncover treasures, and expand your deck of cards. Slay the Spire's card-based combat is easy to get the hang of but requires trial and error to find success.

While you have to start back at the beginning each time you die, you gradually earn new cards, which help you advance further the next time. It's an intoxicating loop that makes it easy to want to try "one more time" before putting down the controller. Each of Slay the Spire's four playable characters have unique decks, adding a ton of incentive to brave the Spire for subsequent runs after the credits roll. Slay the Spire's card-based combat is easy to get the hang of but requires trial and error to find success. We'd be remiss not to include both games in Moon Studios' incredible Ori series.

Ori and the Blind Forest and its 2020 sequel Ori and the Will of the Wisps are two of the best platformers available on Xbox. Both have stunning visuals and tell emotionally gripping stories that feed off of the atmosphere and well-drawn characters. While they are similar in terms of aesthetic and feel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is more action-oriented, whereas the Blind Forest largely focuses on platforming and exploration. The Will of the Wisps gives Ori new abilities that help them square off against daunting bosses.

Both games are brilliant in their own right, and are must-play platformers on Xbox. You should play them in order to get the full emotional weight of the story. With a meaningful progression system, deep but approachable tactical encounters, and a number of great boss battles, Gears Tactics is a can't-miss experience for Gears aficionados and strategy game fans alike. Whether it's designing your own cars and courses or hurtling down cliff sides in trick races, there is plenty to do, see and collect in Forza Horizon 5, an exhilarating racing experience for everyone. Customisation isn't new to Gran Turismo, but it's certainly being handled in a different way upon its return.
